| In the past, Vietri was an Etruscan village called Marcina. Throughout the centuries it was dominated by different populations, reaching its highest splendour during the Roman Empire thanks to the flourishing commerce and fishing trades. However, in 455 it was destroyed by the pirates and its inhabitants sought refuge on Monte Castello.
When the Lombards arrived, the town became populated once again, and thanks to its exceptional location was chosen by Prince Grimoaldo as his summer residence. Since the Middle Ages the ceramics industry in Vietri has been extremely developed; testified by the many remains preserved in the Badia di Cava, as Vietri, until 1806, was a district of Cava.
As a result, Vietri enjoyed certain fiscal concessions and under these favourable circumstances the ceramics industry returned to its ancient splendour. In fact, in 1700 there were more than fifty furnaces.
