There are several findings that testify the ancient origin of Siano, but local legend has it that the first inhabitants of Siano were a tribe of the “Sarrasti”, the founders of the city of Sarno.
It also seems that the toponym “Sarno” dates back to the Roman age, more precisely to the III century A.C., around 216, when Hannibal, after his resounding victory in Canne, moved his army to the valley of Siano in order to punish Nocera, a Roman ally. This area was assigned to his lieutenant Sejanus, who the city was named after.
