| S. Egidio del Monte Albino rises at the bottom of the Monti Lattari, on the road that leads to Ravello and the Amalfi Coast, through the Chiunzi pass.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, in the early Middle Ages, this town was under Lombard rule and then, in the first half of 1500, thanks to its strategic location, became an “Universitas”, an administered municipality.
In this period (1506-1542), in order to symbolise the acquired power and wealth, it built the most beautiful monument, still intact to this day: the Abbey of S. Maria Maddalena in Armillis.
The “Universitas Sancti Aegidii” lasted until 1806, when Joseph Bonaparte, King of Naples, reformed the municipalities and transformed it into a commune.
After more than six centuries, the town remains intact. Its fresh climate, even in the hot, sweltering summer evenings, and the green of the mountains of Monte Albino create a harmonious atmosphere in an historical and artistic environment waiting to be discovered.
