The River Sarno was the natural channel between the coast of Campania and the inland territory, used by commercial ships going back as far as the Oscan civilisation. The first signs of economic activity in the Scafati area in fact came from the rivers, before the fields.
Two political events signalled the spread of agriculture towards Scafati: the first came as a result of the commercial politics of Naples, that directed its activities to the Vesuvian hinterland, the second is linked to the phenomenal stream of the poorest Samnites towards more undiscovered areas of the mountains.
During the Samnite wars, Rome bound Nocera to its economical and military interests by means of a federal pact, thanks to which the territory of the Nocerino confederation was exempt from all influences of Roman legislation, in short, it had complete economic and administrative independence.
