Local Produce

La “scazzetta”

A typical dessert of Salerno, a sponge cake filled with cream and wild strawberries, covered with strawberry icing. This must be sampled even by those without a sweet tooth.

It is known as “of the Cardinal” because of its particular red colour that recalls the head gear of the Cardinal. Its taste is one of its kind; the sweetness of the strawberries mixing with the strong flavour of rum or maraschino (a cherry liquor), succeeds in pleasing all palates, those who prefer the strong distinct flavour of the rum and those, on the other hand, who prefer the sweet delicate taste of the strawberries and wild strawberries.

Extra virgin olive oil

From the olive orchards on the hills of Salerno comes an excellent DOP (Denomination of Protected Origin) product: the Olio extravergine di oliva DOP Colline Salernitane.
This oil has extremely ancient roots and draws its uniqueness from the distinct territory endowed with truly original landscapes and climatic, historical and cultural connotations.
It is produced within an area strongly devoted to the cultivation of the olive tree.

According to reliable sources, the cultivation of olives dates back to the ancient Phocaeans, colonists from the Magna Graecia, who began to diffuse it throughout the land. The Olio Colline Salernitana has a rather intense straw-yellow colour, a distinct, rounded scent of pure olive with a hint of green leaves. Its taste is individual and persistent, pleasantly sour, warm and full-bodied with clear hints of sour vegetables.

The remarkable presence of aromatic tones favours the use of this oil with well-rounded dishes, such as vegetables soups, delicious traditional pasta of Campania and grilled fish.
It is priced at around 5 euros a litre.

“Colli di Salerno” Wine

This wine comes from the flourishing and luxuriant hills of Salerno that surround a territory rich in history and traditions, linked to healthy eating. It is the only type of wine in the province of Salerno to boast the IGT (Typical Geographical Indication) mark of the European Union, indicating a cultivation characterised by natural environments in which sophisticated methods are used.

It is produced from grapes of the highest quality and fuses perfectly with the typical flavours of the local cuisine, underlining its excellence and taste. There are three kinds of wines: white, red and rosé. The minimum alcoholic content must not exceed: 10% vol. in the white wines, 10.5% vol. in the rosé wines and sparkly red and 11% vol. in the novello (young wines).
