The real story of Pagani begins around 1000 years before the birth of Christ, when the Taurans, people originating from Ancient Greece, settled near the Lattari mountains forming a village that at the time was called “Taurania”.
Taurania survived the arrival of the Etruscans, in fact, it grew stronger and became a strategic centre for its location and importance, that came to be rivalled by nearby towns.
A violent eruption razed it completely to the ground forcing the survivors to move to more elevated grounds that safeguarded them, thereby founding a new settlement that was named “Curtis in Piano” or Cortinpiano.
With time this new settlement grew in importance, and a castle was erected “Il Castello di Corteinpiano”, that for a long period was a pleasant holiday residence for the Angevins.
The new centre developed around the castle, and it was so active that it became a barony. It was around this impoverished barony that a new hamlet rose, named “Casalis Padanorum”, commonly called “Casale dè li Pagani”.
