Music and Sport in honour of San Matteo Music and Sport in honour of San Matteo
In Salerno, during September, on the occasion of the celebration of the patron saint…
Salerno
Salerno pays homage to its patron saint through the organising of sporting events and musical shows that surround the traditional religious festival.
It begins with the Palio of San Matteo.
In the expanse of water before Lungomare Trieste, thanks to the collaboration of the Comitato Provinciale CONI and the Autorità Portuale di Salerno, the Regatta of San Matteo sets off (an open category that allows all kinds of sailing boats to participate), the prelude to the Palio of San Matteo. Taking part in the Palio are six trawlers that represent the Saints led in procession, competing with dragon boats; an evocative boat that is a picturesque revised version of the austere canoe, the Chinese canoe.
The decision to use dragon boats in the Palio of San Matteo comes from the consideration that the spirit of this sport is based on socializing and the team, that is, related to the strong team-work of the carriers identified by the Saint they’re carrying.
The celebration ends every year with a concert of a famous artist.
